Total Solar Eclipse 2008

Up one level

Observation Site for the Total Solar Eclipse - Na Kamniakh outside Novosibirsk

Map of eclipse path

We observed the eclipse from Na Kamniakh, a beach on the south-east coastline of the Ob Reservoir, a great lake on the Ob river, 30km south of Novosibirsk. A very nice place, with a good view of the eclipse. Position: 54°43’31” N, 83°01’19”, Elevation 118m.

The blue line is the center line of the eclipse. Our site was about 8.8km east of the center line. This did not affect the duration much, only about half a second shorter than if we were exactly on the center line.
The map is from Xavier Jubier's excellent Google Maps application for solar eclipses.

Just before second contact! Only about 15 seconds before totality, and the shadow is racing towards us. It darkens quickly, and we can se the glow of the sunlit atmosphere at the horizon. (17:44:22 UT+7)

Myself with equipment. Camera with fisheye lens to the left, and 10x50 binoculars on the tripod to the right. Both fitted with solar filters.

After totality: Yeah! A total success!!!
