Time Lapse Sunset

Up one level

By Odd Høydalsvik, Bergen, Norway

time lapse sunset

It is December on the North Sea coast outside Bergen. Winter solstice is not far away - the sun is low in the winter sky, and sets at a very small angle with respect to the horizon. This sequence show 45 minutes of sunset. Each Image of the sun was taken at 3 minutes intervals. The same exposure was used for each image, and a solar filter was in place in front of the camera lens. A few seconds after the sun had disappeared the filter was removed and the background image was taken. We can clearly see the increasing effects of refraction and attenuation as the sun gets lower and lower.

Afterwards, all images was combined in Photoshop CS5 to produce the final image.

Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mk II
